And I am speaking of third grade! The kids with taps hung out together, sneered at the rest of us and killed insects with a magnifying glass and the sun. They liked to burn stuff, especially if it was alive. But they limited their murderous antics to insects and leaves. We let the playground monitors handle those guys while we played kickball and tetherball and dodgeball and climbed on the bars. It seems we were very active, always moving around, and there weren’t many fat kids in school.
The best days in school were Wednesdays and Fridays. Wednesday was hot dog day. We didn’t have to dig into our lunch boxes to trade with another kid who had something we wanted. We could buy hot dogs, with or without mustard. Friday was ice cream day. A guy would come with his cart and we would buy our favorite ice cream treats. I liked the Big Sticks the best.
We would guzzle water from the water fountain that probably had lead in the pipes. In general, we seemed pretty normal and healthy and life was simple.

When I was in school I always had a small group of close friends but I never found it easy meeting new people. By the time I reluctantly entered the work force it was clear that my communication skills were limiting my progress.
The fact that I was as capable or even more capable than my peers meant little when I was unable to create a favorable impression.
I needed to become a lot more confident, dynamic and charming.
And I did. I changed my approach once I learned how to by studying advanced communication skills.
What would have happened if I did not change my approach? Year after year I would have become more and more frustrated and bitter.
I could easily have adopted the world view that nothing ever works out for me and before long I would have spent most of my time with other negative people.

LEGENDARY Hollywood star Dirk Benedict has arrived in the North- East to bring an iconic character to life.
Mr Benedict, better known to audiences as The A-Team’s Templeton “The Face” Faceman, will take on the role of Columbo in Prescription: Murder at Darlington Civic Theatre.
The play will be Columbo’s first case in a UK theatre.
Mr Benedict will lead a cast which also includes acclaimed British actor Patrick Ryecart, and Brookside’s Karen Drury.
The plot sees psychiatrist Roy Fleming and his wife celebrating their anniversary when he is called to deal with a female patient. On returning he has to soothe his angry wife with the promise of a vacation.
When his wife is found dead, Columbo investigates.
Nicola Dailly, press and marketing officer for the theatre, said: “This is the first time Columbo has ever toured the UK in a theatre production and is one of the must-see productions of this year.”
Performances will be at 7.30pm, with matinees on Thursday at 2pm and Saturday at 2.30pm

PUBLIC safety fears closed Truro Bus Station on Monday as “subsidence issues” required emergency repairs.
Bus services were disrupted and passengers were rerouted across the city as the exit to the station was cordoned off around a large hole in the brick surface.
A group of drivers stood across the entrance to the station in a line.
A handwritten sign said: “Owing to urgent repairs to the entrance of this bus station please consult the departure sheets on windows. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.”
Bus operator First Devon and Cornwall said “subsidence issues” posed a risk to their buses, which instead picked up passengers from Green Street, Lemon Quay and Haven House.
Richard Taylor, of Cornwall Council’s highways department, said the station had been looked at the previous week and it was decided that urgent work was needed as “it had become a safety issue”.
He said sand is moving around underneath the surface bricks leaving them uneven but tests on Monday found the foundations were “properly engineered up through and seem to be fine”.
“When we dug the bricks up in one particular spot there was no sand left,” he said.
“It’s not right or what we would expect to happen but the bus station hasn’t got to be moved because of this issue.”
The hole has been filled with tarmac. “It’s a quick fix to get it done while we run the buses,” said Mr Taylor. “Keeping the station in operation is all about safety

A recently launched website helps Californians learn about the new professional massage certification process and understand the laws and regulations concerning the massage profession. The California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) was created to promote public safety and protect consumers. This includes a rigorous statewide certification process for massage professionals with clear standards of preparation and education. The new CAMTC website contains useful information and tools for both California consumers and massage professionals.
CAMTC certification will:
Enable Californians to easily identify certified massage professionals ;
Ensure that certified massage professionals have completed sufficient training at approved schools; and
Ensure that massage therapy can no longer be used as a subterfuge to violate the Penal Code.
CAMTC-certified massage professionals are required to undergo background checks, fingerprinting and other procedures to ensure they are legitimate massage therapists and practitioners with adequate education.
